Enrique E. Calderon, MD

Professional

Dr. Calderon is a board-certified Retina specialist in Ophthalmology, recognized by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists and completed an extensive two-year Retina fellowship, specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management of retinal and vitreous disorders. Prior to joining Metrolina Eye Associates, Dr. Calderon founded Retina of Austin, PA, a referral-based retina practice in Austin, Texas, where he collaborated closely with referring physicians and optometrists to deliver exceptional care.

Dr. Calderon’s career also includes experience at the Ophthalmology division of Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) in Charleston, West Virginia, a Level I trauma center recognized with the Malcolm Baldridge Award in 2015. There, he managed retinal detachments and complex ocular trauma cases in both adults and children. Additionally, he contributed to resident education at the West Virginia University School of Medicine. Dr. Calderon was also a subclinical investigator in several national research studies focused on novel treatments for wet age-related macular degeneration and diabetic macular edema, during his training at the University of Texas at Houston Department of Ophthalmology.

Special Interests

Dr. Calderon specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of retinal and vitreous conditions, including retinal detachment and tears, diabetic retinopathy, macular holes and puckers, dislocated intraocular lenses, retinal vein occlusions, uveitis, retinal artery occlusions, cystoid macular edema, ocular histoplasmosis, central serous retinopathy, and endophthalmitis. During his medical school years, he spent several months studying tropical medicine in Uganda, Africa, which sparked his interest in the ocular manifestations of parasitic diseases.

Education

Dr. Calderon completed his two-year Retina-Vitreous surgery fellowship at Retina Specialists of Ohio/MetroHealth Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. He served his transitional internship year at West Virginia University School of Medicine – Charleston Division and completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Houston. Dr. Calderon earned his bachelor’s degree in Biological Science from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

Personal

Originally from Texas, Dr. Calderon and his wife are excited to be back near family. Outside of the office, they enjoy hiking, running, playing tennis, and watching college football.
